The Lib Dems’ Layla Moran gained Oxford West and Abingdon from the Conservatives’ Nicola Blackwood with 43.7 per cent of the vote, 26,256 in total.
They had a significant 14.8 per cent increase compared to their result in the 2015 General Election.
The Conservatives came a close second at 42.4 per cent with 25,440 votes.
Labour’s Marie Tidball came third with 7,573 votes and UKIP’s Alan Harris received 751, coming last.
YouGov predicted the constituency to be lean Conservative. In the run-up to the election the seat was touted as being a close battle between the Conservatives and the Lib Dems.
There are over 78,000 voters in the constituency and turnout was 75.7 per cent.
