Labour has performed strongly in the first constituencies to announce results, overturning initial fears that Labour strongholds which voted for Brexit could side with the Conservatives.
After holding Newcastle Central by an increased majority in the first result announced, Labour have consolidated that victory with other wins in Houghton and Sunderland, Sunderland Central, Washington and Sunderland West, Newcastle Upon Tyne East and Newcastle Upon Tyne North.
However, the Conservatives have dramatically increased their share of the vote. It appears support for UKIP has dramatically waned following the 2015 General Election and the 2016 EU Referendum. Initial results this evening suggest that the Conservatives appear to be the beneficiaries of UKIPs apparent decline.
